my mom's view on my writing

I have emails with my cousin and some of her friends. They talked about mostly what they read recently and found interesting. I joined through my cousin's invitation. She's nice.

I of course wrote some thoughts on some of the readings. They are talking about an article right now about Chinese should learn to repent privately, not something like a political confession in front of everybody in a public meeting. And by repent privately, Chinese could learn to build independent personality and think from themselves. The author is popular writer and professor in Mainland China. I was upset over some of the comments in the article about Chinese. I guess there's a big gap between Chinese who went through something as overwhelming as Cultural Revolution and those who did not. Their views on what is Chinese and what it meant in almost every old sayings are vastly different. At least they are vastly different from mine, a person who sits in front a screen, putting himself in a jail he made from thin air, and a person who is in the most populated Chinese place on this Earth.

I started to write what I thought. I was excited at first. But I could not really write. Because I very clearly know what I was about to write would definitely be frustrating to my cousin. I sat in front of the screen for 5 hours, I deleted every single entry. I emailed nothing. I was extremely mind boggling. There was something I really want to talk about. But I felt my words was going to be difficult to some people. I stepped out of the room. My mom asked me what did I do in there for 5 hours. I told her what happened. She bid me to take a walk with her. We discussed about it during the walk. It seemed to clear my mind.

I emailed my thoughts on the article the next day, privately to my cousin. It clearly bothered my cousin. For one she did not gave me reply at first but asked if I could share with other people. I did, and a long discussion commenced. My mom also asked how it went. So I showed some of the emails of mine and my cousin's to her.

After reading through many posts, She had a comment that shook me. She said that my cousin was really good at writing. She could explained herself really well, at the same time very smoothly, not offensive. She said that I did well too. But I did not express my meaning fully, there always seemed to have something alluding. I felt she also implied that I was offensive. I asked about it, and she confirmed it. I was kind upset. The one thing I did not want to be was being offensive. The one thing I wish to do is to express myself clearly. I failed both.

After that, I fell out of the discussion. I felt that I could not grasp the theme of the discussion and the article. I went very one sided. And when I went back to see some of the previous emails about other topics. I felt I was running circle again. The feeling of being trapped and that my perception of the things I saw was awkward, weird, within a very limited viewing angle compared to other people annoyed me deeply.

random thoughts

There are two modes of mind when I am reading something. The first mode, which bothers me very much. Because when I am in that mode, I could not concentrate on what is in front of me. Rather, I could only criticize it. From the moment I flip the first page and shoot my eyes onto the first sentence, I am not reading. Although I read every word, I am also weighing every single one of them. The result is very disturbing. I have a hard time to focus on the context. I am rather busying chatting inside of my brain. There will be broken sentences that I could distinctly remember. However, they seemed to be shredded, might even be taken out of context.

The second mode is when I am totally engrossed in the context of whatever I am reading at the moment. I'll most likely be in a place where it seemed that I am in the context, or it would appear that I am not in this mundane world. I don't criticize, I don't have inside chatting too much. What happened is that the contents of whatever I am reading filled my brain, like an air blown up a balloon. I feel relaxed and concentrated at the same time.

It is critical, picky, usually shallow, and focusing on expressing myself, rather than absorbing the material in the first mode. It is different for the other mode. It does not make me deep, but it would appear that I am more agreeable, more mellow. I would rather follow the trail. It is not that I would agree with everything I see in front of me. However, I use less language to formalize anything at the time I am reading. The two modes are not completely separated. But it is easier to go from the mellow one to the critical one.

emotional

emotion is important. it is an energy. but it is also an anti energy sometimes. for example, when people are down, they would lack energy sometimes. however, depressed emotion could sometimes be channeled to something else. one of the way is through music. it could be the only thing a depressed person was able to do. he could only sing and sing and sing until he could not anymore.

i wonder what emotion really is. i have a hard time to describe my emotion most of the time. happy, angry, depress, sad, seemed to be easy enough. but there is something tingling, something boiling inside of my chest. i could not name it? i wonder if naming it is important. i feel like tearing up my chest and let something out. my through was stuffed. a feeling of a sea of words trying to brake the dam. although to my understanding, there is really nothing at all. i have tried to write. i could not jot down anything coherent at all. anything left on papers is just garbage. they had all been repeated again and again. the urgency i felt was terrible. i could only try to contain it. but to what limit? what capacity could i have?

people who acted

people who acted are energy. those who watched and listened are only receptors. take for example, if you are in a group, and people keep talking while you keep your silence. you are merely a black hole, which sucked other people's energy. you will need to dish out some energy or people will leave you eventually. because it's not fair that people keep giving, and you continue to take in. i don't like the word fair. however, if it's just emptiness, people won't feel much. but a black hole takes in at all time.

people who acted are energy. musician makes music, it is an energy in sound wave. painters paint pictures, it manipulates energy through light. athletes are moving through space with strength and power, the image is mimicked in onlookers' brains, in which onlookers reflected to themselves, and create a sense of strength and power inside their skulls which is an energy. actors act with emotions, which is a form of energy. Politicians rallied people around them with speeches, tactics, personal charms and sometimes ideals, all those can be seen as energy, through which people feel emotions, dreams, and inspirations.

it is a fact that everyone have been onlookers one time or another on their way to death. most people grow up being both onlookers and people who acted. why are there different levels? how come some of them become onlookers for the most of their lives? there is no shame of being onlookers. but how do you give back? being onlookers means we can be inspired, thus we regain some of the energy so we could act ourselves too. but a black hole, a black hole has no time to act while energy constantly flowed in. it is too busy sucking itself in along with whatever energy they could grab...

favorite recipe! (2)

about a week ago,

Link in Soul Calibur 2

the model of Link in Soul Calibur 2 is awesome. I feel somehow it's better than those 3D zelda game models. i think it is mainly due to the animations of the fighting and 8 way movements. it felt so much alive. i'd wish to see a 3D zelda game with Link being able to fight like in Soul Calibur 2 and moves alike as well...

the model of Link in Soul Calibur 2 is just awesome... I wonder why Nintendo did not intend to design a Zelda game like that... but i also see that the fighting would be a hardcore fighting, if it's like Soul Calibur 2 game.

the problem with being a hardcore fighting system is that the fight could be tiresome after a few tries... at least for most people. being arcadish fighting system is how zelda game survived and popular, i think. it's hard to balance between realistic fighting and arcadish fighting.

arcadish fighting in my definition is not many defense options, and offense is often fast and exaggerated. quicktime events are usually accompanied with it in modern games.

realistic fighting is at least more than one defense options, offense can be fast but also complicated enough to think...in speed as well...

most fighting systems go between the two. arcady is good for multiple enemies with grand graphics. realistic focused more on player's skill and familiarity of the character they are using. Soul Calibur is in between. Zelda is very much arcady. Oni and Blade of Darkness are more close to realistic. imp...that is.

I don't think Nintendo is doing anything wrong by choosing arcady. however, i really wish to see Link doing great moves on his enemies in a fight...in a zelda game... the animations in such moment must be a delight...

thoughts on camera in my imagined game

I was at lost recently about the game I was thinking of. The game I envisioned was a game of hardcore fighting action adventure. The camera would pan on the back of the character most of the time. My problem now is how to make the fight exciting, especially when it was against multiple enemies? How to make it like you have option to fight one on one like Oni and Blade of Darkness, even in multiple enemies environment. but also give players options of fighting similar to God of War. What i mean about the last option is that to create a rhyme during the fight similar to god of war, or prince of persia warrior within, rather than a hardcore one on one events like in Oni or BoD.

I proposed to create fighting action adventure with 3 Camera options originally, one is like Sacrifice, another one is soft lock on, the last one is hard lock on system. the reason for three camera controls is because i believe that in PC gaming, or 3D gaming in general, camera control is of the vital point of player's experience. 3 camera control could support at least 3 gaming types, puzzle solving, platforming, and fighting. the 3 camera types will be defined by focus point of the character.

in the first camera option, character's focus point will follow wherever the cursor is. there's no auto focus at all. so the player will in a way be able to examine the environment similar to the classic adventure games. This option could also be designed to support a wizard type of character in fighting. it will be just like in the Sacrifice, camera would be able to move around to view the environment even when running. so the camera will not always be focused on character's back. i will define that at this moment, character's focus point is 90% on the environment, 10% on the character itself. so this mode is no good for melee fight.

in the second camera option, it will be just like Oni. camera fixed behind character's back. But this time, there's no cursor on the screen, players will not be able to point and click. the focus point will follow by a pre-defined focus field, at least that's what i assumed this was how Bungie guys did to Oni's soft lock on system. the interactivity with the environment would be hugely reduced. melee fighting options will be limited as well. but here's the problem where i would like to find a way to be like Oni and BoD but also added something to integrate platform and fighting, to create a rhyme that's different from Oni and BoD. here, the players will constantly adjust camera to face the enemy, or to interact with environment. the character's focus point right now is 60%-75% on character itself, 25-40% on the environment.

in the third camera option, the focus point is 90% on the character itself, 10% on the environment. the Platform ability will only be valid if it is integrated with fighting. the fighting options are turned all on. The camera is locked on one enemy hard so the player does not need to adjust the camera at all. interaction with the environment will be canceled out with the priority on fighting.

but the problem is in the second options. because i do think that hardcore fighting action adventure could only attract a handful. the only way to increase the rhyme in fighting is to make the reaction bottom very versatile. because the fighting ability is reduced, but the platforming ability is enhanced. running around is very much possible. with camera on back, keyboard asdw, it's easier to get a precise position. but it also creates a problem that it's hard to be arcadish like god of war... but there must be a way... with reaction bottom being versatile, the whole thing would be like batman asylum...

Darwin Autobriography

This excerpt is about his description of his own brain change.

".....

I have said that in one respect my mind has changed during the last twenty or thirty years. Up to the age of thirty, or beyond it, poetry of many kinds, such as the works of Milton, Gray, Byron, Wordsworth, Coleridge, and Shelley, gave me great pleasure, and even as a schoolboy I took intense delight in Shakespeare, especially in the historical plays. I have also said that formerly pictures gave me considerable, and music very great delight. But now for many years I cannot endure to read a line of poetry: I have tried lately to read Shakespeare, and found it so intolerably dull that it nauseated me. I have also almost lost my taste for pictures or music. Music generally sets me thinking too energetically on what I have been at work on, instead of giving me pleasure. I retain some taste for fine scenery, but it does not cause me the exquisite delight which it formerly did. On the other hand, novels which are works of the imagination, though not of a very high order, have been for years a wonderful relief and pleasure to me, and I often bless all novelists. A surprising number have been read aloud to me, and I like all if moderately good, and if they do not end unhappily-- against which a law ought to be passed. A novel, according to my taste, does not come into the first class unless it contains some person whom one can thoroughly love, and if a pretty woman all the better.

This curious and lamentable loss of the higher aesthetic tastes is all the odder, as books on history, biographies, and travels (independently of any scientific facts which they may contain), and essays on all sorts of subjects interest me as much as ever they did. My mind seems to have become a kind of machine for grinding general laws out of large collections of facts, but why this should have caused the atrophy of that part of the brain alone, on which the higher tastes depend, I cannot conceive. A man with a mind more highly organised or better constituted than mine, would not, I suppose, have thus suffered; and if I had to live my life again, I would have made a rule to read some poetry and listen to some music at least once every week; for perhaps the parts of my brain now atrophied would thus have been kept active through use. The loss of these tastes is a loss of happiness, and may possibly be injurious to the intellect, and more probably to the moral character, by enfeebling the emotional part of our nature.

......."

Try to understand

Under communism will national characteristics remain?

No. They'll disappear.

That's too bad.

Why? We will enrich ourselves. you think the German or the French have no good qualities?

Then we will never have a new Pushkin, Tchaikovsky, or Surikov. It will be on international culture.

You can't limit your vision to what has already been created. It's time you learned to be more broad-minded. If you don't understand this you'll remain a narrow-minded, semicommunist Russian and nothing more. No one wants to take away your national identiy, but you will advance to a higher stage. If you remain where you are you'll become a good poet of the Russian Federation but not of the USSR. Tvardovsky fights for the Russian Poetry, and he is the best Russian Poet now. I remember him. He is very talented but narrow-minded. Like many of us he is limited to the Russian horizons where peasant life prevails -- which Marx called the idiocy of the village. The peasants' limitations shade into idiocy. The peasant likes narrow horizons, be he Russian, Georgian, or German. I had a little book which I picked up somewhere after war. It was the correspondence between Tchaikovsky and Taneev. Taneev admired Tchaikovsky's music and was proud of Russian culture. That's fine, said Tchaikovsky, but I also admire German, Italian, and French music. Wasn't he a nationalist? Very much so. But one doesn't limit oneself only to Russian. The most talented people never limit their field of vision. They add useful aspects from their neighbor's work. this is what's truly wonderful.

exercise: body and knowledge

it is important to exercise. but it is also important to exercise while gaining knowledge of anatomy, physiology, food, knowledge of the exercise, and the limit of one's self.

most of athlete will have knowledge of the benefit of warm up, stretch, and strength training. but it's not enough. they have to make reading and updating their knowledge a habit. athletes, no matter which level, are group of people who are at least interesting in exercise. they use their own body to do a set of movements, simple or complicated. it will always involved with risks. to minimize risks, any athletes will need to have knowledge from human anatomy, physiology, food, one's self, and the exercise they are doing.

what's the benefit of this are: minimize over exerting one's self, provide body enough food and rest, to realize what benefit the chosen exercise could provide, and what's the risk it involved. and do not forget that, any human being will get old one day physically. but if one made searching those knowledge as a habit, it will serve well even when the body is less capable than younger.
